Introduction

Some people find nicotine cravings the hardest thing to cope with when quitting. There are many products available such as Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) and varenicline which can give you the extra support you need to beat the cravings. Using licensed stop-smoking medications, in combination with support from your local stop-smoking service, means you are four times more likely to stay quit.

How stop smoking medications work

Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT)

Including patches, gum, lozenges, inhalators and mouth spray, is available through our service as part of our treatment programme. Many products can also be bought from pharmacies and supermarkets without a prescription.

Vapes

Current evidence indicates that e‑cigarettes and vapes are 95% less harmful than smoking and can be an effective aid for quitting. It is important to use UK‑regulated e‑liquids that meet Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency standards and to avoid homemade or illicit vaping products. Smokefree Somerset can provide vapes as part of the 12‑week structured treatment programme.

Varenicline

Varenicline is a prescription‑only medication that works differently from NRT and vapes by helping to reduce cravings and make smoking feel less satisfying. Smokefree Somerset can provide this within a structured 12-week support programme with a Stop Smoking Practitioner.

These are all effective treatments to help you stop smoking, although you may find that one approach suits you better than another.

There are several factors to consider, so we recommend speaking with one of our specialist Stop Smoking Practitioners for personalised guidance. Medication alone is unlikely to help you quit successfully. However, receiving support from a local stop smoking service makes you at least four times more likely to stop smoking for good.
