My name is Rob, I’m 50 years old, and I smoked for 25 years before making the decision to quit. The turning point came when I started experiencing severe breathlessness. It made me realise the impact smoking was having on my health and motivated me to make a change.

I had tried to quit several times before, but this time felt different. I was tired of smoking and genuinely wanted to stop. That determination became one of the most important factors in helping me succeed.

One of the biggest challenges was changing the habits and routines I had built around smoking, especially after meals. Even after the physical cravings faded, those everyday reminders remained. Learning new ways to fill those moments was an important part of my journey.

During the first few days after quitting, I focused on keeping active. I spent three days hiking in Snowdonia, which helped distract me and gave me something positive to focus on while adjusting to life without cigarettes.

Since quitting, my life has changed in so many positive ways. My health has improved significantly, I can taste food properly again, I have more energy, and I no longer feel restricted by smoking. I’ve also saved money and feel much more in control of my life.

The most rewarding part of quitting has been regaining my health and enjoying the financial benefits that come with being smokefree. Eight years later, I remain committed to my decision and continue to choose a smokefree life every day.

My advice to anyone thinking about quitting is to find your reason why. For me, it was my health. Once I was truly ready to stop, everything changed. Quitting wasn’t always easy, but it was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.
