In a powerful and candid reflection, Andy shares his journey from heavy smoking to a healthier, smoke-free life. At the height of his habit, he was smoking up to 84 cigarettes a day, especially during high-stress periods like Carnival season.
I was definitely smoking a good 20 by 5:00 in the afternoon, Andy recalls
Everything changed on 12 January 2015. After waking up the next morning feeling physically drained and with a heavy chest, Andy decided to see if he could go a few hours without a cigarette. That small decision turned into half a day, then a full day, then a month, and now, nearly nine years later, he remains smoke-free.
One of the most striking realisations for Andy was how noticeable the smell of smoke is to others.
It’s on your fingers, your clothes, people do notice, he says. I used to walk around thinking no one could smell it.
The benefits of quitting have been profound. From struggling to climb stairs to now being able to run 5K comfortably, the transformation in Andy’s physical health and wellbeing is clear.
I don’t think I’ll ever smoke again, he concludes.
This story is a testament to the power of small steps and the lasting impact of choosing to quit. It’s a reminder that change is possible, one day at a time.
